Man Shot by Dog in Bizarre Accident After Leaving Gun on Bed
Unusual Incident Involves a Dog and a Shotgun
A shocking incident occurred in Pennsylvania when a man was allegedly shot in the back by his own dog, leading to an unexpected emergency response. The 53-year-old individual, whose identity has not been disclosed, was reportedly cleaning his shotgun when the tragic event unfolded.
According to reports from Shillington police, the man had laid his weapon on the bed while he was engaged in the process of cleaning it. His dog, seemingly eager for attention, jumped onto the bed. What followed was an unintentional trigger of the gun, resulting in the man being shot in the lower back.

The incident took place at around 11:13 pm on Tuesday night. The man's son made the call to 911, reporting that a male had been shot in the 300 block of State Street. Initially, there was confusion about who the shooter was, with the injury being identified as a shotgun wound to the lower back.
Cpl. Michael Schoone, a representative from the police department, mentioned that during the response, they were informed that the shooting was caused by the dog jumping onto the bed, which led to the gun discharging and striking the man.

Police noted that the man involved in the incident was unsure about the stage of the gun cleaning he was in. A spent shell casing was found inside the weapon, raising questions about the circumstances. Cpl. Schoone speculated whether the dog's paw might have gotten caught in the trigger or if there was a malfunction with the weapon.
After the incident, the man was taken to the hospital, where he underwent initial surgery for his injuries. The situation is still under investigation, but law enforcement indicated that it appeared to be an accident.
Cpl. Schoone emphasized the importance of treating every weapon as if it were loaded, advising to follow basic safety rules such as keeping the weapon pointed in a safe direction and keeping the finger off the trigger. He described the incident as "the perfect storm," suggesting that it was a matter of timing and circumstance.
The man and his son were the only individuals present in the house at the time of the shooting. There were also two dogs in the residence. Following the first operation, the man required additional surgery, though the full extent of his injuries remains unclear.
The Shillington Police Department was contacted after hours for further comment, but no immediate response was provided. This unusual incident highlights the potential dangers associated with handling firearms and the unpredictable nature of pet behavior. It serves as a reminder of the need for vigilance and caution when dealing with weapons, even in the comfort of one’s home.
