Chris Eubank Jr's Shocking Weight-Loss Strategy

Chris Eubank Jr has taken drastic measures to avoid a £375,000 fine for his rematch against Conor Benn, but he is now facing another potential financial penalty. The 36-year-old boxer was previously fined £375,000 before their first fight in April after he missed the 160lbs weight limit by just 0.05lbs.

Benn later revealed that he used the money from the fine to purchase a Rolls Royce, highlighting the significant financial implications of not meeting weight requirements. Both fighters weighed in on Friday ahead of their rematch on Saturday night, and to everyone's surprise, Eubank Jr came out lighter, weighing in at 159.1lbs, while Benn weighed 159.3lbs.

To reach this weight, Eubank Jr reportedly cycled while wearing a sauna suit, and another video showed him drenched in sweat after being covered in multiple non-breathable layers designed to shed weight quickly. He shared these videos on social media with the caption: “Ain’t no way I’m missing weight this time.”

Although the use of sauna suits and similar methods is not officially banned by the British Boxing Board of Control (BBBofC), boxers have been warned against using them as they are considered an inappropriate way to cut weight. In July, Eubank Jr was fined an additional £10,000 by the BBBofC for the “misuse of social media” after posting several videos of his weight-cutting process before his victory over Benn.

Eubank Jr may now face another fine after sharing similar videos on his social media pages on Friday. Eddie Hearn, promoter of the event, expressed confusion over Eubank Jr’s actions, stating, “He just baffles me completely. What are you trying to prove, what are you trying to show? You know you’ve had issues with the British Boxing Board of Control. It’s the stubbornness of the individual.”

Robert Smith, general secretary of the BBBofC, emphasized the concerns surrounding dehydration during weight-cutting processes. He told The Athletic in July, “Our doctors are very concerned with dehydration, so that’s what we advise everybody, all the trainers. We send out documentation in regards to it.” He added that the BBBofC provides education on rapid weight-making measures but cannot police every boxer’s actions. In this recent case, the council was satisfied with the explanation provided by Eubank Jr’s trainer.

For Saturday’s rematch, a rehydration clause is in place, meaning both Eubank Jr and Benn cannot weigh more than 10lbs over the 160lbs limit on the morning of the fight. This clause aims to ensure both fighters are properly hydrated and meet the weight requirements safely.
