Horror Film That Left Bong Joon Ho Terrified Today

A New Horror Film That Has Left Genre Icons in Shock

The latest horror film, Keeper, has been described as “nightmare fuel” and is making waves in the cinematic world. Directed by Osgood Perkins, who is known for his work on Longlegs, The Monkey, and The Blackcoat’s Daughter, this new film is already generating a lot of buzz among horror enthusiasts.

Keeper follows Liz (Tatiana Maslany), who embarks on a romantic anniversary trip with her boyfriend Malcolm (Rossif Sutherland) to his family's remote cabin. As the couple spends time together, Liz begins to experience increasingly sinister phenomena that gradually reveal the home’s dark secrets.

Perkins has long been recognized for his ability to create films that leave audiences feeling uneasy. His latest project, Keeper, has received high praise from several notable figures in the horror genre.

Praise from Industry Legends

Damien Leone, the creator of Terrifier, said that Perkins has a natural talent for discomfort that transforms into fear. Bong Joon Ho, the director of Parasite and Mickey 17, praised the film, saying: “Osgood Perkins has a natural talent for discomfort that transforms into fear.”

Fede Alvarez, the director of Evil Dead and Alien Romulus, called Keeper “a sensory experience of pure terror.” Eli Roth, known for Green Inferno and Hostel, compared it to “a surreal David Lynch movie.” Guillermo Del Toro, the creator of Frankenstein, described the film as “horror origami that skillfully folds into itself.”

James Wan, the creator of Saw, added that Keeper is “a terrifying, ghostly descent into madness.” Hideo Kojima, the video game designer behind Death Stranding, also praised the film, stating that Perkins blends “new fear and surprise.”

Mixed Critical Reception

Despite the glowing reviews from industry icons, critics have had a more mixed reaction to Keeper. The film currently holds a lukewarm 65% rating on Rotten Tomatoes at the time of writing.

Discussing Film described elements of Keeper as “nightmare fuel,” but they also noted that “despite its unique premise and a riveting lead performance from Tatiana Maslany, Osgood Perkins’ Keeper fails to cross the finish line in one piece.”

The Guardian highlighted that what makes Perkins’ film refreshing is its focus on visceral effects rather than trying to turn the story into a modern relationship parable. The Hollywood Reporter added that Keeper’s narrative feels “gossamer-thin and feather-light despite Maslany’s meaty performance.”

IndieWire criticized the film for lacking chemistry, clarity, and conviction, comparing it to “a crumbling marriage that would serve everyone involved by ending as soon as possible.” NME echoed similar sentiments, calling the film “a run-of-the-mill horror with some underwhelming spooks.”

Future Projects and Cast

Despite the mixed critical reception, Perkins is set to return to the screen with his next horror film, The Young People, which is already in production. Maslany will rejoin Perkins for a third time in the cast, alongside Nicole Kidman, Heather Graham, Johnny Knoxville, Lola Tung, Nico Parker, and Brendan Hines.
