Metal legend steps down after 60-year legacy
David Coverdale Announces Retirement After 60 Years with Whitesnake and Deep Purple
After a remarkable 60-year career fronting the iconic rock bands Whitesnake and Deep Purple, legendary singer David Coverdale has officially announced his retirement. The 74-year-old music icon shared an emotional video on the band’s YouTube channel, expressing his decision to step away from the stage.
In the video, David said, “The last few years, it has become very evident to me that it’s time really for me to hang up my rock and roll platform shoes and my skin-tight jeans.” He expressed deep gratitude to everyone who supported him throughout his journey, including musicians, crew members, fans, and family. “I thank everyone who’s assisted and supported me on this incredible journey. But it really is time for me to just enjoy my retirement and I hope you can appreciate that.”
Whitesnake was formed in the late 1970s, with David as the only constant member throughout the band’s long and successful history. The group gained traction in the glam metal scene before achieving mainstream success with hits like Here I Go Again and Still of the Night.

David added, “It is time for me to enjoy my retirement and I hope you can appreciate that. Once again, I love you with all my heart. Fare thee well.” The video then transitioned into a remix of their 2011 song Forevermore, accompanied by footage of Whitesnake performances over the years.
Before founding Whitesnake, David had been a key member of Deep Purple. He joined the band after Ian Gillan’s departure in 1973 as part of the ‘Mark III’ lineup, which lasted until the group split in 1976. While some members later reformed Deep Purple in 1984, David was already making waves with Whitesnake and chose not to return.
Whitesnake’s popularity grew across the UK, Europe, and Asia during the 1970s, with David aiming to break into the American market in the mid-1980s. Their eponymous 1987 album (known as 1987 in the UK) became a major hit, featuring tracks like Is This Love. Over the years, David continued to perform with the band, releasing 13 studio albums, the most recent being Flesh & Blood in 2019.
He was inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2016 alongside other Deep Purple members. However, David hasn’t toured with the band in the past three years due to a severe illness. In 2023, he described his experience with a “the worst sinus infection I’ve ever had in my life,” which required seven months of increasingly strong antibiotics and Prednisone steroids.

David’s wife, Cindy, praised his decision to step back, saying she was “so proud” of him. She shared, “You gave so much of yourself, so freely, and with so much love and care. Now you get to do whatever you want to!”
Their son, Jasper, also celebrated David’s retirement, posting a heartfelt message with a photo of them having dinner together. “I know no greater man, nor any better father,” he wrote. “The family I was born into is one of international renown thanks to his empathy, talent, and ability to connect with so many people the world over.”
Jasper concluded, “And now, the next step… whatever you bloody well desire, Sir! Here’s to you, David Coverdale — father, husband, storyteller, warrior, artist… hero. Bravo, Dada, for a thousand thousand jobs well done. Let the histories honor you forevermore.”
