22-Year-Old Man's Life-Threatening Burger Challenge
A 22-Year-Old in Critical Condition After Swallowing a Whole Burger
A 22-year-old man is currently fighting for his life in a hospital after reportedly swallowing an entire burger "for a joke" during a meal with friends. The incident, which took place on Thursday, has left the young man in critical condition and on a ventilator due to significant damage to his vital organs.
The man, whose identity has not been disclosed, was admitted to the G. Gennimatas Hospital in Koropi, Greece, on November 13. He is now in the intensive care unit, where medical professionals are working tirelessly to save his life. According to reports, the incident occurred during a casual gathering with friends, where the man allegedly attempted what he thought was a harmless prank.
A friend who was present at the time described the events leading up to the crisis. He mentioned that the man began panicking after swallowing the burger and then collapsed on the ground. The friend told local media: "He had something like a panic attack. He gets up and runs a bit further away, we thought he was going to spit it out and didn't want to make a mess around others."
The friend continued: "He didn't do that. He makes a move to come back and then goes away again to spit it out. We thought, 'Okay, now it's coming.' That didn't happen either." The situation escalated when the man started hitting his back against a column, seemingly trying to dislodge the burger.
The friend denied that the man had intentionally stuffed the burger into his mouth as part of a challenge. He said: "He just said, 'Look.' If you want to call it something, call it a joke."

According to medical reports, the man is believed to have stopped breathing for two full minutes. Michalis Giannakos, president of the Panhellenic Federation of Public Hospital Workers (POEDHN), expressed concern over the situation. He stated: "He can only be saved by a miracle; he is in a very critical condition." Giannakos also questioned how a person could swallow a whole burger without chewing, adding that even if first aid was administered, a doctor's intervention was essential. He emphasized that prolonged lack of oxygen to the brain could cause irreparable damage.
Local police have confirmed that they are investigating the incident and plan to seek footage from the restaurant to determine whether anyone encouraged the man to attempt the alleged prank. Konstantina Dimoglidou, a police spokesperson, said authorities would review the evidence to understand the circumstances fully.
Matina Pagoni, former president of the Athens-Piraeus Hospital Doctors Association (EINAP), described the situation as tragic. She said: "A 22-year-old young man who went to Koropi just to have some fun is now intubated and in extremely critical condition, with very serious problems affecting his brain, kidneys, and all his organs."
This incident serves as a stark reminder of the dangers associated with reckless behavior, especially when it comes to food. While many people enjoy challenges or pranks involving eating, this case highlights the potential for severe consequences. It also raises questions about the importance of safety and awareness when engaging in such activities.
As the medical team continues to monitor the young man's condition, the community remains hopeful for a miracle. The story has sparked discussions about the risks of similar pranks and the need for greater caution when participating in food-related challenges.
