Breathtaking glimpses of NYC's next first lady, 28, in the artist's bold work
The Political Stance of New York City’s Next First Lady
The political views of Rama Duwaji, the wife of New York City’s newly elected mayor Zohran Mamdani, have come under intense scrutiny as her social media posts and artistic work have gained attention during the mayoral campaign. As an illustrator, Duwaji has used her platform to express strong opinions on global conflicts, particularly those involving the Middle East.
One of her most notable works features an image of a stack of U.S. bills labeled “Israeli war crimes.” This artwork was shared by Mamdani himself in July 2024, accompanied by a message stating, “New York charities send over $60 million every year to fund Israeli war crimes, and that number is only growing. It’s time to bring an end to this.” The post sparked significant debate among supporters and critics alike.
Another example of Duwaji’s art came in November 2020, when she posted a drawing depicting a Palestinian family on their land with an Israeli plane flying overhead. The caption read, “Presidents come and go, but American imperialism never changes. Thinking of the Palestinians, who suffer no matter who's in office.” This piece also drew attention for its bold political messaging.
More recently, Duwaji raised eyebrows by posting four broken heart emojis on top of a picture of Palestinian social media influencer Saleh Al-Jafarawi, known as Mr FAFO. Al-Jafarawi, 28, was killed last month by an anti-Hamas militia reportedly armed by Israel. Videos circulating on social media appeared to show him celebrating the October 7 attacks.

Duwaji, who identifies as Syrian but was born in Houston, will officially become the First Lady of New York City on January 1, 2026, when Mamdani is sworn in. She recently took the stage alongside her husband at Brooklyn's Paramount Theater, where she made a striking appearance in an elegant black lace ensemble and a blunt, choppy fringe reminiscent of Audrey Hepburn’s iconic look from Breakfast at Tiffany’s. Her polished wave and immaculate dark-painted nails left a lasting impression on supporters as the election results became clear.
With over one million followers on Instagram, Duwaji has built a large following captivated by her aloof and unbothered aesthetic. Her journey into the public eye began through one of the world’s largest dating apps, Hinge, where she met Mamdani in 2021. At the time, she was 24, while Mamdani, then 29, was already gaining recognition for his political ambitions.
Mamdani shared his experience on The Bulwark podcast, saying, “I met my wife on Hinge so there is still hope on those dating apps!” The couple announced their engagement in October last year and exchanged vows in February at City Hall in Lower Manhattan. They also celebrated their union with an opulent engagement party and Nikkah ceremony in Dubai in December 2024.
Duwaji graduated from Virginia Commonwealth University School of the Arts, studying in both Doha, Qatar, and Richmond, Virginia. After completing her studies, she returned to Dubai before moving to New York City in 2021, just months before meeting her future husband.

When they met, Mamdani had recently been elected as a state assemblyman representing the 36th district, which includes parts of Queens neighborhoods like Astoria and Long Island City. He quickly rose to prominence, announcing his candidacy for mayor on October 23, 2024. Initially, he faced long odds, with less than one percent of voters supporting him. However, he gradually gained traction, especially among young voters drawn to his engaging social media presence.
His focus on making New York City more affordable resonated with many residents. He pledged to freeze rent costs for stabilized tenants, make city buses fare-free, and open city-run grocery stores offering cheaper prices. These promises earned him both support and criticism from various political groups.
By the time the Democratic primary rolled around on June 24, the race was tight, with many expecting former Governor Andrew Cuomo to win. Instead, Mamdani surprised everyone by defeating Cuomo in the first round with 43 percent to 36 percent. Cuomo conceded the night of the election, and Mamdani went on to win the general election, marking a remarkable victory for the 34-year-old.
