The Mystery of Zayn Malik's Legal Involvement with One Direction
One Direction fans have been buzzing with excitement following reports that Zayn Malik has legally rejoined the band a decade after his departure. However, the situation is more complicated than it seems.
Zayn, known for his hit "Pillowtalk," left the band in 2015, citing the need for some 'private time' away from the spotlight. He denied any rift with his bandmates, Harry Styles, Niall Horan, Louis Tomlinson, and the late Liam Payne. Now, a change to Zayn’s details on the band’s company, PPM Music Limited, on Companies House on November 3 has sparked speculation that he might be rejoining One Direction.
Some reports suggested that Zayn is now an 'active director' alongside his bandmates. However, as of November 13, 2025, all the bandmates are listed on Companies House as 'resigned' from their Director roles, a change that occurred on December 31, 2022, according to filing history. Zayn's director role was terminated in 2016 after he left the band.
The only visible change on Companies House in recent years was the passing of Liam Payne, which resulted in his cessation as a person of significant control of the company. The change on November 3 that has fans excited simply shows that Zayn changed his address to the USA, which doesn't necessarily indicate a move towards a reunion.
Zayn continues to have 'significant influence or control' over PPM Music Limited, similar to Louis, Harry, and Niall, and this status has remained consistent since 2016.
Understanding 'Person with Significant Control' (PSC)
According to Gov.uk, a person with significant control (PSC) is someone who owns or controls your company. They’re sometimes called 'beneficial owners.' A PSC must meet one or more conditions known as the 'nature of control.'
Most PSCs are those who hold: * More than 25% of shares in the company * More than 25% of voting rights in the company * The right to appoint or remove the majority of the board of directors
Currently, listed on Companies House as the only active directors are lawyer and senior partner at Lee & Thompson, Lawrence Engel, and director at Live Wire Business Management, Alan McEvoy. Whether reports that Zayn has become a director of PPM Music are true remains to be seen, as changes to Companies House filings have a lag on the site, meaning any changes in the last 24 hours likely won’t show yet on the filing history.
Fans, stirred up by these reports, have been hoping that the remaining One Direction members might reunite one final time to honor Payne, who tragically died on October 16, 2024, after falling from a Buenos Aires hotel balcony.
Speaking to The Sun, who report Zayn did make some legal move towards One Direction, a music source said: “This is a huge moment. While heartbreaking, Liam’s passing has brought them together, it’s even more sad he was the biggest cheerleader of a reunion. PPM was the original company they set up when they appeared on the show. The name stands for Princess Park Manor, the private gated complex they were moved into when they won the show. Since Liam’s passing the boys have been in contact.”
Recent Changes and Speculation
One change that has happened recently on One Direction’s other company, 1D Media Limited – for which no members are directors, either, but still have significant control – is that Niall has amended his name from Niall Horan to Niall Maria Horan. It’s unclear as to why this might be.
Rumors of a reunion in some capacity aren’t completely out of the blue though, as Louis and Zayn have been spotted hanging out together in recent months, and there was speculation they are starring in a Netflix road trip shown together.
