Green Chef's menopause meal kits: Worth the try?

The Intersection of Meal Kits and Women’s Health

Subscription meal kits have become a significant part of the food industry, and so has the conversation around menopause. It's no surprise that these two worlds are now coming together in an innovative way. Green Chef, a meal delivery service known for its healthy options, has launched a special menu range focusing on two critical aspects of women’s health: menopause and menstruation.

This new collection features 17 recipes designed to support women through these life stages. However, there is some skepticism surrounding this move, given the number of brands that have capitalized on women’s health trends in recent years. The idea of selling products that claim to alleviate menopause symptoms has raised eyebrows, especially when it comes to items like "menopause shampoo."

Kirsty Wark, a well-known broadcaster, recently expressed her frustration with how middle-aged women are often targeted by dubious products promising relief from menopause symptoms. Her question—“Who needs menopause shampoo, for god’s sake?”—resonates with many who feel exploited by such marketing tactics.

As someone in the perimenopause stage, I can relate to the confusion and uncertainty about what really helps. I often find myself questioning whether I need collagen supplements or special pyjamas to manage hot flushes. These doubts highlight the need for more informed choices when it comes to health and wellness.

While it's important to recognize the role of food in overall wellbeing, the question remains: can specific dietary changes make a difference in managing perimenopausal symptoms? According to the team at Green Chef, yes. They believe that their new menu range bridges the gap between everyday eating and supporting women's health through carefully selected ingredients.

Key Nutrients for Women's Health

The Green Chef team focused on key nutrients that support women during menstruation and menopause. For menstruation, they emphasized iron, which is essential for energy and blood health. Vitamin C was also included to enhance iron absorption, particularly from plant-based sources.

On the menopause side, calcium and vitamin D were prioritized for bone strength and overall health. Lily Keeling, the Senior Recipe Development Manager and Registered Nutritionist at Green Chef, explains that these nutrients help mitigate risks associated with hormonal changes, such as decreased bone density and increased risk of cardiovascular disease.

However, she also emphasizes that there are no quick fixes. Managing menopause symptoms requires a long-term commitment to a balanced diet, along with attention to sleep and stress management. “It really depends on the individual and what stage of life they are at,” she says. “With menstruation, you might see a potential increase in energy from the iron foods, while with menopause, it's more about risk mitigation.”

Putting the Menu to the Test

Curious about the claims, I decided to try out the Green Chef menu for a month, ordering three meals a week. Among the dishes were baked salmon with a green goddess dressing, which includes vitamin D for bone health, and a jerk tofu bowl rich in plant-based iron. Other recipes featured kiwis and peppers, both high in vitamin C to aid iron absorption.

Each recipe card came with a brief explanation of its nutritional benefits. For instance, the roast duck in orange and sage sauce was highlighted for its protein content, which supports muscle mass and bone health. The Cajun chicken and kidney bean one-pot was praised for its iron content, which helps in oxygen transport in the blood.

The Final Verdict

After four weeks, I didn't notice any immediate changes in my symptoms, but I did feel that the meals were beneficial for my overall health. The variety and taste of the dishes were impressive, even if some of the ingredients were missing upon delivery. While there were some issues with the packaging, the experience encouraged me to break out of my usual eating routine.

I found myself enjoying the meals more than expected, even those featuring tofu and kidney beans, which I typically avoid. The convenience of having meals delivered and the variety of options made the experience worthwhile.

Green Chef offers a range of pricing options, starting at £5.50 per serving for 4 people, with 4 meals a week. If you're looking for a way to support your health while enjoying delicious meals, this could be a viable option worth exploring.
