Greggs unveils 'Bitesize' stores at UK train stations
Greggs Expands with Bitesize Stores at UK Train Stations
Greggs, a well-known British bakery chain, is set to introduce its latest concept: 'Bitesize' stores located in UK train stations. The first of these compact outlets has already opened at Sevenoaks Railway Station, marking the beginning of an exciting expansion plan.
These small-format stores are designed to cater to travelers and commuters who are always on the move. Located in high-traffic areas such as busy train stations, they will offer a selection of Greggs' most popular pastries and treats. The initial store at Sevenoaks has created 10 new local jobs and operates seven days a week, providing convenience for customers throughout the week.
The menu features a variety of beloved items, including Sausage Rolls, Steak Bakes, Sweet Treats, and Fairtrade hot drinks. This range ensures that there is something for everyone, whether they're looking for a quick snack or a more substantial meal.
Further Bitesize shops are scheduled to open at Dartford Station in Kent and Cheshire Oaks in December. Alongside these smaller stores, Greggs also plans to open more traditional locations. The company aims to open around 120 new shops this year, which equates to approximately four new stores each week across the country.
To ensure the success of the Bitesize format, Greggs will initially assess consumer behavior and operational efficiencies in these new stores. This trial period will help the company understand how customers respond to the compact model and make necessary adjustments if needed.
Tony Rowson, Property Director at Greggs, shared his excitement about the new initiative. He stated, "We're excited to announce the launch of our 'Bitesize Greggs' concept. This small but mighty new format will allow us to reach more customers on the go from compact units, whilst still offering a selection of our best-selling products. The rollout of 'Bitesize Greggs', initially on a trial basis, will support our broader estate growth plans."
In addition to its expansion in train stations, Greggs has also ventured into the pub industry. Earlier this year, it opened its first-ever free house, the Golden Flake Tavern, located within the Fenwick Newcastle department store. This pop-up pub will operate until February 15, 2026.
The Golden Flake Tavern offers a unique experience with two exclusive beers on draught: the Pink Jammie Pale Ale and the Gosforth 1939 Stottie Lager, developed in partnership with the Newcastle-based Full Circle Brew Co. The fully-stocked bar also features a Greggs-inspired cocktail menu.
Diners can choose from a menu of 15 Greggs-inspired traditional pub dishes, including chicken bake Parmo, steak bake mixed grill, sausage roll & mash, and a Greggs ploughman's platter. The dessert menu includes yum yum bread & butter pudding and pink jammie trifle, a dish featuring doughnut pieces set in jelly, topped with jam, custard, and whipped cream.
The traditional Sunday carvery, described by the pub as its 'piece de resistance,' offers a choice of steak bake, chicken bake, or cheese & onion bake as the centrepiece of the roast, accompanied by trimmings like cauliflower cheese, roast potatoes, and Yorkshire puddings.

As Greggs continues to innovate and expand, it remains to be seen how these new ventures will impact the market. With its growing presence in both train stations and pubs, the brand is positioning itself as a key player in the UK's food and beverage industry. Will these new concepts redefine culinary brilliance and challenge established competitors? Only time will tell.
