Gwyneth Paltrow Opens Up About Struggles with Mental Health and ADD

Gwyneth Paltrow, the Oscar-winning actress and founder of lifestyle brand Goop, has recently opened up about her personal challenges with mental health. In a candid discussion on the latest episode of her Goop podcast, she revealed that she believes she may have Attention Deficit Disorder (ADD) and is currently dealing with increasing anxiety, intrusive thoughts, and a "messed up" nervous system.

The 53-year-old actress shared that after years of following strict wellness routines, she now finds herself needing to relearn how to regulate both her mind and body. She emphasized the importance of being more intentional with her time, noting that she often feels pulled in many directions. Her goal is to feel more grounded throughout the day.

Paltrow also discussed how her nervous system has been significantly affected by stress, hormonal changes, and the pressures of fame. She mentioned that anxiety, which she had never experienced before, has started to creep into her life. According to her, this anxiety is linked to hormonal imbalances, specifically oestrogen dominance, which can lead to heightened feelings of anxiety.

"I've lived a very intense life in the public eye for a really, really long time," she said. "And so I think whenever we're at the mercy of people's opinions and all the energy behind the opinions - I'm very sensitive, as most of us are - it kind of frays my nervous system."

She further explained that part of her struggle is physiological, while other aspects are psychological, emotional, and related to her public life. She noted that in the past few years, these issues have hit her harder than ever, leading to symptoms like racing heartbeats and intrusive thoughts even when she’s exhausted.

ADD is a neuro-developmental disorder characterized by persistent problems with attention and impulsivity. While the term is often used to describe the predominantly inattentive presentation of ADHD, it is considered outdated in the UK and is no longer an official diagnosis.

Paltrow is currently working with professionals and leaning on her family for support. She has two therapists, one of whom specializes in the nervous system. She also credits her friends and family for providing comfort during difficult times. She mentioned that being with her children and husband helps her nervous system calm down.

The Iron Man star also spoke about how everyday work-related challenges now trigger disproportionate emotional responses. She shared that she sometimes takes emails or work issues very personally, comparing it to feeling "slapped in the face." Her goal is to rewire her mindset so that such situations don’t feel as overwhelming.

While Paltrow has not spoken publicly about her personal experience with ADD before, she addressed the topic in a 2022 podcast episode where she discussed how ADHD in women is often misdiagnosed or overlooked. She highlighted how symptoms are frequently mistaken for anxiety, stress, or hormonal imbalances.

Known for her extreme wellness protocols, including IV drips, infrared saunas, and detox cleanses, Paltrow has recently begun to loosen her rigid routine. She mentioned that she has started being less strict with her anti-inflammatory diet, allowing herself to enjoy occasional treats like hot fudge sundaes and drinks.
