Is Tenerife Safe to Visit Post-Tidal Surge?

Tenerife has experienced a severe tidal surge this week, with powerful waves resulting in the deaths of three individuals and injuries to over 15 people. Emergency services have confirmed that a woman and two men were swept into the sea from beaches near the Puerto de la Cruz resort, Santa Cruz de Tenerife, and Granadilla.

Authorities are urging the public to avoid piers and breakwaters as conditions are expected to deteriorate further, with swells reaching between two to four metres over the next few days. The Canary Islands are now on high alert for coastal hazards, and visitors to the Spanish archipelago are being advised to exercise extreme caution.

Regional government officials have also warned tourists: ‘Do not risk taking photographs or videos where the waves break.’

For those currently in Tenerife or planning a visit, it is essential to understand the risks associated with tidal surges. According to the National Oceanography Centre, these events can last anywhere from a few hours to several days. Here’s what you need to know to stay safe during such weather conditions.

Tenerife Travel Advice After Weather Warnings

The UK Foreign Office has not issued any travel warnings for Tenerife due to the current weather situation. However, their website advises: ‘Take care when swimming in the sea. Some beaches, especially around Spanish islands, may have strong undercurrents… If you are walking along unmonitored beaches, be aware that waves can come in further than expected and have strong undertows.’

British tourists are also encouraged to follow the Spanish Meteorological Office (AEMET) and European Meteorological Services for updates on severe weather.

What to Do if You’re in an Emergency Abroad

If you require immediate assistance while on holiday in Tenerife, the emergency number to call is 112. In case of a crisis, you can also reach out to the Foreign Office for support and advice.

Can I Get a Refund if I Cancel My Holiday to Tenerife Due to the Tidal Surge?

If you have travel insurance and wish to cancel your trip due to the weather, it is unlikely that you will receive a refund. Most insurers only cover cancellations if the FCDO advises against non-essential travel to your destination. Currently, there are no such warnings for Tenerife.

Some providers may require local or national authorities to declare the area unsafe for travel. If your holiday provider or airline is operating normally in the Canaries and there are no advisories, you will not be eligible for cancellation cover.

According to gocompare.com, it is advisable to review the ‘cancellation and curtailment’ section of your policy. This can provide guidance on cancelling or shortening your trip due to extreme weather.

Another factor to consider is whether the extreme weather was forecast before you booked your holiday and before purchasing your insurance. If the weather was anticipated, you will not be covered for ‘anticipated’ events. Essentially, if you knew the weather would be bad but still booked your trip, you will not be entitled to a refund.
