Man Dies After Botched Hair Transplant in Turkey

A man has passed away following a hair transplant procedure in Turkey, as reported by local authorities. The deceased, identified as Mentor Rama, was a 36-year-old British citizen of Albanian descent. He had undergone a hair transplant and dental treatment in Istanbul before his tragic death.

Local reports indicate that Rama was staying at a hotel in Şişli, an area close to the clinic where he received the hair transplant. The next day, he underwent dental treatment and then collapsed at his hotel. He was rushed to Seyrantepe Hamidiye Etfal Training and Research Hospital via ambulance but was declared dead at approximately 4:30 pm on November 11.

Following an autopsy, his body was handed over to his family, who arranged for it to be returned to his home country.

Hair transplants in Turkey are a popular choice for many Britons due to the significantly lower costs compared to the United Kingdom. Procedures can cost as little as £1,500, which is a fraction of the £10,000 typically charged in the UK. In August of this year, another British man died after undergoing a hair transplant in Turkey. The 38-year-old had the procedure at a private clinic called CINIK in Istanbul’s Besiktas area. According to Turkish outlet OdaTV, he became unwell after the surgery. However, the clinic stated that the patient's condition worsened “unexpectedly” during the “preparatory phase” before the actual procedure began.

Turkey is a major hub for hair transplants, with surgeons performing around 60% of the world’s procedures. In 2022, an estimated 150,000 Britons traveled to the country for cosmetic treatments. Medical tourism contributes more than £2 billion to Turkey’s economy annually, highlighting its significance in the global healthcare sector.
