NFL Legend Bernie Kosar Shares Disturbing Hospital Health Update

Bernie Kosar's Health Struggles and Ongoing Medical Challenges

Former NFL player Bernie Kosar has recently shared a concerning update on his health, revealing that he is currently undergoing multiple medical procedures due to severe health complications. The 61-year-old former quarterback, known for his time with the Cleveland Browns, Miami Dolphins, and Dallas Cowboys, has been battling liver failure and Parkinson’s disease for some time now.

Kosar announced on Wednesday that he was preparing for his third surgery within just a week. This comes after he initially received news of a potential donor liver over the weekend, only to later discover that the organ was infected. Following this setback, he began experiencing internal bleeding and had to undergo two aggressive procedures on Monday. On Wednesday, he took to social media to ask for support from fans before his next procedure.

"Man, all the duress right now, I could really use your love, support and actual prayers today," Kosar said in a Facebook video, highlighting the emotional toll of his situation.

A History of Health Issues

In July 2024, Kosar revealed to Cleveland Magazine that he was dealing with cirrhosis and early-stage Parkinson’s disease. He described how his body "gave out" during an appearance at a Browns game against the Jets in December 2023. At the time, he felt as though he might not make it home from the event. Despite this, he continued to avoid medical attention until the new year, when he finally went into the hospital and received a massive blood transfusion.

"I really felt like I wasn't going to make it home from the Jets game," he recalled. "I sucked it up, though, and continued to avoid the doctors until the new year. Then I went into the hospital and got a massive blood transfusion. It was like: 'How are you alive? How are you moving? Because your hemoglobin levels are so low.'"

Kosar’s health issues are not just recent developments. He has long struggled with liver-related illnesses, which he previously downplayed without identifying a clear cause. His NFL career, which spanned nine years with the Browns, three seasons with the Dolphins, and one with the Cowboys, left him with numerous health challenges. He claims to have suffered around 100 concussions and 80 broken bones during his playing days.

The Emotional Struggle of Waiting for a Transplant

As reported by News 5 Cleveland over the summer, Kosar has been on a liver transplant list for over a year. However, he has expressed mixed emotions about the possibility of receiving a donor liver. He explained the psychological conflict of relying on someone else’s misfortune for his own survival.

"To really realize that I'm going to be getting a liver from somebody that really could have a bad accident today," he said. "From a psychological standpoint, I don't wish any ill or issues like that on anybody, and to think that that's kind of what we're waiting for right now, it's spiritually conflicting."

The August report also highlighted that Kosar requires surgical procedures every couple of days to remove fluid from his blood. This ongoing treatment underscores the severity of his condition and the constant medical intervention needed to manage his health.

Life After Football

Despite his health struggles, Kosar has remained active in the football community since retiring in 1996. He has made appearances at Super Bowl events and was even seen with pop star Taylor Swift at a pre-game gathering at Travis Kelce’s house two years ago.

His story serves as a reminder of the physical toll that professional sports can take on athletes, even long after their careers have ended. As he continues to face health challenges, the support of fans and loved ones remains crucial in helping him navigate this difficult chapter of his life.
