Tesco Bank Closes Clubcard Points Account

Important Notice for Tesco Clubcard Pay+ Users
Shoppers who have a Tesco Clubcard Pay+ account need to take immediate action as the service is set to be discontinued on 26 April 2026. This decision marks the end of a popular financial product that combined a prepaid debit card with a round-up savings account, allowing users to earn extra loyalty points on their spending. The service was first introduced in March 2021 and quickly gained popularity among customers.
In an official communication to its customers, Tesco Bank explained that the decision was made to focus on other projects. While the news may come as a disappointment, there are no plans to introduce a similar service in the future. Many loyal users expressed their frustration on social media platforms, with some sharing their concerns about losing the convenience and benefits provided by the Clubcard Pay+ account.
One user, @Tom_K1962, shared a “WTF” gif alongside a message expressing disbelief at the closure. Another user, @rhyspyle1997, voiced their worries about the impact on their savings for important occasions like Christmas. Despite these reactions, Tesco Bank has assured affected customers that they will be contacted directly. Additionally, it confirmed that users can continue collecting points with their Clubcard and that other savings accounts are available.
What is a Clubcard Pay+ Account?
The Clubcard Pay+ account, which became accessible to nearly 20 million Clubcard members just four years ago, was an instant hit with the public. It functioned as both a debit card and a savings account, offering a contactless Visa debit card that could be topped up via the Tesco Bank mobile banking app. Users could spend the funds as needed while also earning loyalty points.
Like the standard Clubcard, users could collect two points for every £1 spent in Tesco during the first 100 days after opening the account, which then dropped to one point per £1 thereafter. Additionally, users could earn an extra point for every £8 spent outside of Tesco. One of the most appealing features was the ‘Round Up’ function, where each transaction would be rounded up to the nearest pound, and the difference would automatically be transferred to a savings account.
Recent Developments and Other Services
Despite the closure of Clubcard Pay+, Tesco has been working hard to keep its customers satisfied. In recent months, the company reintroduced its Clubcard Challenges initiative, which allows users to earn bonus points by meeting personalized spending goals. It also expanded its meal deal options by adding the popular Australian treat, Tim Tam, to its selection.
However, following the sale of its banking arm to Barclays in 2024, millions of customers were advised to be cautious of potential changes. Fortunately, those with a Clubcard Pay+ account need not worry about losing their earned points, provided they follow a few simple steps.
What Should You Do If You Have a Clubcard Pay+ Account?
Clubcard Pay+ will officially shut down on 26 April 2026, but you can continue using your card until then. If there is any remaining balance on your account, make sure to withdraw all funds before this date. As long as you have a Clubcard linked, your points will be transferred. If not, you can apply for one through the Tesco website or app.
Tesco Bank encourages customers to ensure their balances are zero by April, but if you forget, don’t worry—the supermarket will return any remaining funds and notify you of any issues. Interest for the previous financial year will be paid into the Round Up accounts on 31 March 2026, so even if you’ve withdrawn your money before this date, it’s advisable to check your contact details are up to date.
Make sure to update any subscriptions tied to your Clubcard Pay+ account, such as Netflix or Disney+, and switch them to a different card to avoid being cut off from your favorite shows. Finally, consider which account you want to transition your spending to. If you prefer to stay with Tesco Bank, there are several savings products available, including the Internet Saver account, Instant Access Cash ISA, and Fixed Rate Saver.
While none of these accounts connect to your Clubcard for points on everyday spending, you can still use the loyalty scheme at Tesco tills. Ultimately, the choice depends on what works best for you.
