Three Dead in Popular Brit Spot After Massive Waves Hit Island
Tragic Tidal Surge in Tenerife: A Day of Chaos and Loss
A terrifying incident unfolded on Saturday as an enormous wave crashed into onlookers along the coast of Puerto de la Cruz, a popular resort city in the northern part of Tenerife. The powerful tidal surge resulted in one death and nine injuries, marking a harrowing day for both locals and tourists.
The wave struck during a period of strong winds and treacherous weather conditions that have affected the entire Spanish island. In addition to the incident in Puerto de la Cruz, six French holidaymakers were also injured in a separate event at Roque de las Bodegas on Tenerife's north-eastern coast. This has brought the total number of casualties to 15 injured individuals and three fatalities.
Among those who lost their lives was a 79-year-old Dutch woman and a 43-year-old local man. An unknown man was found floating in the sea off El Cabezo beach in Granadilla, located in the south-west of the island. While the Foreign Office has not reported any British nationals being injured or killed in the incident, the tragedy has left many shaken.
The Most Devastating Incident
At 3pm on Saturday, the most severe incident occurred when a massive tidal wave swept people from a platform into the sea. A woman, who was among the elderly tourists, tragically died in this incident. Nine others were injured, with three of them in critical condition when they were taken to the hospital.
Emergency responders described the scene, stating that local police and other individuals at the location managed to rescue those affected from the water. One of the injured individuals was found to be in cardiac arrest, and efforts were made to revive her. Despite the attempts by paramedics, she was confirmed dead at the scene.
The injured suffered a range of injuries, including hip and leg wounds. They were transported to different hospitals across the island for treatment.
Another Tragic Loss
Earlier that same day, a 43-year-old man lost his life at Charco del Viento. According to local reports, he was a resident of La Orotava and had been fishing when he was swept into the sea. Emergency services received an alert about his situation and deployed a helicopter to rescue him. He was taken to a landing area in Santa Cruz de Tenerife, where he was confirmed dead due to the severity of his injuries.
An investigation led by the Civil Guard is currently underway to determine the exact circumstances surrounding his death.
Incidents Involving French Tourists
The first reported incident occurred around 11:30am on Saturday, when multiple French tourists were injured after ignoring warning signs and getting too close to the sea. Although none of the tourists suffered life-threatening injuries, three men and three women were among the casualties.
They managed to escape the water with the help of other people and were taken to the hospital. Five of them were transported to medical facilities, with one using an air ambulance.

Uncertainty Surrounding Another Victim
The identity of the man who was pulled out of the sea at El Cabezo beach in Granadilla remains unknown. Local authorities have not provided details on whether he ended up in the ocean under similar conditions as those swept away by the waves.
Warnings from Authorities
Canary Islands officials reminded locals and holidaymakers to exercise "maximum caution at the coast" on the day of the three deaths. They advised against standing at the end of piers or breakwaters and warned against taking photographs or videos near areas where waves break.
The alert regarding the sea conditions was issued on Friday, with authorities warning people about the incoming tidal surge and strong winds. They urged individuals to avoid coastal paths and not take risks by capturing footage of the rough seas.

Ongoing Concerns
Despite the warnings, the Canary Islands remain on high alert for coastal hazards. Between January and October, 54 people died from drowning in the region.
As the community mourns the loss of lives and reflects on the dangers of the sea, questions continue to arise about the frequency of such incidents and the need for increased safety measures. The tragic events in Tenerife serve as a reminder of nature's power and the importance of vigilance when near the coast.
