Ukraine's Hardest Loss Since 2023 in Pokrovsk Fight

The Strategic Significance of Pokrovsk
It has been nearly four years since Russian forces entered Ukrainian territory, sparking the most significant armed conflict on the European continent in recent history. Despite the ongoing war showing no signs of ending, the battle for the eastern city of Pokrovsk could mark a turning point for Kyiv, both in terms of military losses and the broader outcome of the conflict.
EuroNews reports that Pokrovsk, often referred to as "The Gateway to Donetsk," is reportedly surrounded by 150,000 Russian troops. Kyiv claims these forces outnumber their own by a ratio of eight to one. However, Ukrainian authorities state that the city has not been completely cut off, with an access route of less than 10 kilometers still operational to ensure the flow of resources and soldiers.

A Potential Major Setback for Zelensky
According to The Telegraph, if Pokrovsk falls, it would represent the largest defeat for President Volodymyr Zelensky's government since the Russian capture of Bakhmut in 2023. However, this victory comes at a steep cost for Moscow, with 25,000 troops reported wounded or killed in October alone.
The newspaper notes that the Kremlin has employed a similar strategy in capturing both cities: deploying large numbers of infantry to maintain a prolonged siege, enduring heavy casualties to gain even a small foothold.
German state news agency DW highlights that before the invasion, Pokrovsk had a population of 60,000. By the summer of 2025, only 1,500 residents remained. The city’s strategic location makes it a crucial logistical hub for Moscow, as well as a key factor in controlling the Donetsk region.

Tactical Advantages and Military Challenges
The BBC points out that Russian troops have taken advantage of weather conditions, particularly thick fog, to rapidly advance into the city and intensify the Pokrovsk offensive. The Zelensky administration acknowledges the challenging situation in the eastern city, with between 300 to 500 Russian soldiers already inside its boundaries.
The Telegraph notes that there have been growing calls for Kyiv to withdraw its forces from Pokrovsk. Ukrainian generals have previously faced criticism for delaying decisions and risking lives in attempts to hold their positions. Many experts are questioning whether this ongoing offensive, which has lasted almost 18 months, will once again be an example of Zelensky’s military leadership trying to hold the line.
The Role of Drones in Supplying Forces
“Ukrainian troops are being supplied by drones, both aerial and ground drones, because the situation is very dangerous,” said Marina Miron, an honorary researcher at the Centre for Military Ethics and the Department of Defense Studies at King's College London, in an interview with DW. “If you cannot supply the troops or evacuate casualties, it's like a ticking time bomb.”
This reliance on drone technology underscores the critical need for continuous support in such a volatile environment. Without effective supply lines and evacuation methods, the situation could quickly spiral out of control, leading to further loss of life and strategic disadvantages.
