Wayne Rooney Reveals £164m Man Utd Signings That Cost Years

Wayne Rooney Criticizes Manchester United’s Pre-Ineos Recruitment Strategy

Wayne Rooney, a former Manchester United legend, has made some strong remarks about the club’s transfer strategy before the arrival of Ineos. He described it as “horrendous” and pointed out three specific transfers that he considers mistakes. These comments come after Sir Jim Ratcliffe and his Ineos representatives took over football operations at the club almost two years ago, acquiring an initial 25% stake from the Glazer family.

Before this change, football operations were largely managed by Ed Woodward, who held the position from 2012 to 2021. Rooney, who played for the club between 2004 and 2017, believes that during this time, the club made several errors in the transfer market.

Rooney specifically highlighted the signings of Romelu Lukaku, Paul Pogba, and Zlatan Ibrahimovic. He noted that while these players are talented, the club spent large sums of money on them without achieving the desired results.

Speaking on The Overlap Fan Debate brought to you by Sky Bet, he said: "The recruitment at Manchester United before last summer was horrendous. They were just bringing big names in - you look at Lukaku, Zlatan, Pogba - they're good players but they were just bringing names in and spending enormous amounts of money. It's going to take a bit of time to get over those mistakes."

Since Ineos' takeover, Manchester United's approach to the transfer market has changed significantly. The focus has shifted towards signing Premier League-proven players or young talents from abroad. This strategy has been evident in the club's recent recruitment, with players like Bryan Mbuemo, Matheus Cunha, and Senne Lammens making an impact under manager Ruben Amorim.

These new signings have helped the club gain some momentum this season. Manchester United has remained unbeaten in their last five Premier League matches, sitting seventh in the league table with 18 points.

Rooney sees positive signs at the club and believes that Amorim's side could potentially qualify for the Champions League next season. He added, "If you look at Manchester United over the last ten years, the players have been absolutely battered. Now they've got a couple of results and you can see a bit of confidence coming back."

He also acknowledged the challenges faced by Amorim, stating that he had been critical of the manager in the past. However, he now sees improvement and believes that the team is gradually getting better. "There's definitely been some improvement. It's been really tough for Ruben Amorim, and I've been critical of him. We are seeing them improve though and players are getting to know each other a bit better."

Rooney concluded by highlighting the promising signs at the club, even if they may not win the league. "Although they're not going to win the league, they could possibly sneak into the top-four."
