Why Comedian Marcus Brigstocke Bought the Same Motorhome Twice
A Comedian's Unforgettable Motorhome Story
Comedian Marcus Brigstocke, known for his appearances on BBC's The Now Show and Live at the Apollo, recently shared a peculiar tale about his motorhome. The story revolves around a decision that he now considers one of the silliest things he has ever done.
Brigstocke, 52, was speaking on the Spent! podcast, which is associated with Nationwide. He revealed that his beloved motorhome, used for touring, was stolen in broad daylight from outside his house in South London. Initially, he thought the vehicle was lost forever. However, two years later, Norfolk Police reached out with surprising news — they had found it.
To retrieve his motorhome, Brigstocke had to purchase it at an auction from the insurance company. This led to what he calls a "wildly stupid" purchase, which he now deeply regrets.
Emotional Attachment and Memories
The comedian explained that he bought the motorhome back for much more than its worth. His emotional attachment to the vehicle played a significant role in his decision. "My kids had grown up in it," he said. "To be fair, when I did get it back - there was a little box on the side of it… it was always difficult to open. Only I could do it."
When he finally opened the box, he found his children's buckets and spades from the beach still inside. "The scumbag who'd stolen it hadn't managed to open it," he added. Despite this, he admitted that buying it back was a "wildly stupid thing to do." He didn't need it anymore, and his life had changed significantly.
Challenges and Regrets
After retrieving the motorhome, Brigstocke faced the daunting task of fixing and cleaning it. "It needed so much work to be fixed and cleaned after this guy had nicked it. I tried a few times to make it feel mine again. That failed utterly."
He kept the motorhome for four or five more years before eventually selling it. "It was really sad to see it go," he reflected.
Tension with Wife
Brigstocke also mentioned that the purchase caused some tension with his wife, comedian Rachel Parris. She wasn't pleased with his decision to buy back a motorhome filled with memories from his first marriage. "My wife Rachel, we had not been together very long when I bought it back - she wasn't at the stage in our relationship where she felt able to go: 'What are you doing? Please don't buy the motorhome you used with your first wife.'"
He admitted that he was obtuse and didn't consider her feelings at the time.
