Why European Workers Avoid Using Their Remaining Leave
European Workers Struggling to Plan End-of-Year Vacations
As the end of the year approaches, many European workers are still unsure about how to use their remaining annual leave. A recent survey conducted by a payment services company on 20,000 people across 21 European countries reveals that nearly half (47%) have yet to take between seven and 20 days off.
Most individuals express a desire to use these days for travel to a new "dream" destination, with 40% of respondents highlighting this as their top choice. Additionally, 10% are interested in attending live shows, while 9% wish to enjoy outdoor activities or visit Christmas markets.
However, there are several factors preventing people from making the most of their time off. The primary obstacle cited in the research is financial concerns, with 23% of respondents indicating they need more time to save money or budget for their trips. This issue is particularly prevalent in certain countries, such as Serbia, where 40% of people reported financial constraints, followed by Bulgaria (33%), Romania (32%), Croatia (27%), and Ireland (27%).
Generational Differences in Holiday Planning
There are noticeable differences in how various generations approach their holiday planning. For instance, Gen Z appears to be more proactive in using their time off for bucket list experiences, with 74% determined to do so. In contrast, Gen X is the least likely (57%) to tick off their final experiences before the end of the year. Millennials fall somewhere in the middle, with 69% planning to use their time off in this way.
On the other hand, some countries seem less affected by financial concerns when it comes to taking holidays. Citizens from the Netherlands, Germany, Switzerland, the Czech Republic, and Cyprus appear to be the least impacted by financial barriers. Interestingly, some of these groups, like the Dutch, are waiting for the perfect bargain before booking their trips, with 14% of them doing so. Similarly, Brits, Portuguese, French, and especially Croatians (15%) are also waiting for favorable deals.
Work and Family Obligations Hinder Travel Plans
At the same time, 12% of consumers say they haven’t booked any specific Christmas experience because they are stuck with work or family duties. This could explain why Gen X is the least likely to check off their bucket list experiences before the end of the year.
Despite these challenges, overall optimism remains high among Europeans, with over two-thirds (67%) believing they will achieve their final bucket list goals before the year ends. Just under a third (30%) are still eager to do so but are unsure if they’ll manage it.
However, hopes are not running high in the UK, where only 34% are thinking of enjoying another leisure experience before 2026, the lowest percentage among the surveyed countries. Other countries with low percentages include the Netherlands (41%), Belgium (46%), Ireland (49%), and France (51%).
Prioritizing Experiences Over Material Goods
Europeans are increasingly recognizing the value of experiences, with 81% believing that money spent on them is always worth it, according to the study. As a result, many consumers are deliberately adjusting their budgets and making conscious trade-offs to accommodate their getaways.
The first thing to go is usually clothing, with 40% of consumers cutting back on it to afford their trips. Dining out is also being reduced, with 39% of respondents cutting back on this expense. Luxury indulgences are being sacrificed by 32%, while 32% give up on tech gadgets. Additionally, 25% are forgoing upgrading their home décor to free up their holiday and experience budget.
Conclusion: Balancing Budgets and Dreams
As the year draws to a close, the challenge for many Europeans lies in balancing their budgets with their dream destinations. While financial constraints and personal obligations pose hurdles, the desire for meaningful experiences continues to drive holiday planning. Whether it's a trip to a new place, a live show, or simply spending time with loved ones, the end of the year offers an opportunity to make memories that last a lifetime.
