Young Footballer Hospitalized After Severe Head Injury in Match

Incident During Women's Champions League Match

During a Women's Champions League match on Wednesday night, a Spanish footballer was rushed to the hospital after suffering a concerning brain injury. The incident occurred during Atletico Madrid's clash with Juventus, which was overshadowed by alarming events involving Andrea Medina, a 21-year-old left-back.

Medina began her senior career at Real Betis before joining Atletico Madrid in 2022. She collapsed on the pitch after colliding with Juventus star Barbara Bonansea. The player remained on the floor for an extended period, prompting immediate medical attention from the club's staff. After receiving emergency treatment, Medina was carried off the field on a stretcher and transported to a hospital via ambulance.

English broadcaster Jacqui Oatley, who was commentating on the match at Centro Deportivo Alcala de Henares, described the incident as "horrendous" in a social media post. She wrote: "This is horrendous. We’ve just commentated on Atletico Madrid’s @UWCL game v Juventus for Disney+ and young Spanish left back Andrea Medina suddenly went down - she received urgent lengthy treatment before being carried off. We wish her all the very best and hope she’s OK."

Following the incident, Atletico Madrid women released a statement regarding Medina's condition. The statement read: "Andrea Medina was replaced after suffering a traumatic brain injury. The footballer is doing well but has been transferred to a hospital center to undergo additional tests."

Despite the worrying injury, the match was completed, with Atletico Madrid losing 2-1 to Juventus. Goals from Emma Stolen Godo and Bonansea secured the victory for Juventus. This defeat caused Atletico Madrid to drop to 10th place in the Women's Champions League table, with one win and two losses from three games. Meanwhile, Juventus climbed to eighth place in the standings.
